Queens Terrace
Location: Maybole, Scotland
Type: Residential
Stage: In progress
Elevation treatments have been purposely designed as simple and rhythmic with a nod to the surrounding typologies. Larger living room windows have been provided with a smaller option for bedrooms and a high level window for use at stairs and kitchens. Emphasis has been placed on the creation of openings within the facade in a strong rhythmical fashion along with the exploration of a rhythmical roof-scape.
The elevation form of two main gables per block type has been supplemented with a subservient middle gable, smaller in scale and with a darkened materiality.
Initial massing on the site has been established in the form of linear blocks forming open courtyards between. Linear strips have been bro- ken down further to unit types. Topography on the site has dictatec the direction of the forms, allowing light to be maximised as a priority.
Block form has been inspired by local context with strong roof pitches evident within the surrounding area. This has been translated onto the proposals and tied back into the overall vision. Subservant pitched forms join units to create a ‘blocks’ with 5 ‘blocks’ within each ‘courtyard’.
A central courtyard joins the courtyards together providing further visual and green links within the proposals which are discussed further in this section.
